Woman's hands clasped in prayer over open Bible, Trusting God

Why do we find it so hard to take God at His word? We waver and become anxious even when we know it is God that has spoken to us, either by His Spirit or through Scripture. One of the reasons this happens is that we sometimes view God through the lens of our interactions with human beings. People lie and change their minds regularly. They speak rashly and make promises impulsively and are unable to fulfill the words they have spoken and the promises they’ve made. If this has been your experience, it may be really challenging for you to take God, whom you have never seen, at His word.

How do we change this pattern of behavior?

Immerse yourself in Scripture

It takes immersion in Scripture to reframe your perception and the power of the Holy Spirit to embed the Word in your heart so that you see God through the lens of truth and not through past experiences with people. Here are some of my favorite scriptures concerning the validity of God's promises:

  • Joshua 21:45 – “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.”

  • Joshua 23:14 – “Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.”

  • Jeremiah 1:12— “The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”

  • Isaiah 55:10-11 – “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

  • Ezekiel 12:28 – “Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

  • Lamentations 2:17a – “The Lord has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he decreed long ago.”

Why can we trust God?

We can trust God to keep His Word and His promises to us because of His faithfulness. Hebrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24 says, “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”

To be faithful means to be loyal and steadfast. God is immutable. He does not change over time. His loyalty and steadfastness will not change. Ever.

In Malachi 3:6 God says, “I the Lord do not change. So, you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”

Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

My personal favorite, Numbers 23:19, says, “God is not human, that he should lie. not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” 1 Samuel 15:29 says, “He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind, for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

God is unchanging in His nature, true to His word, and keeps His promises. Our faith rests on His immutability, on His unchanging nature, and on His character, which is steadfast, reliable, and consistent.

And this, dear friend, is why we can put our trust in Him.
